At Sensor Designs we have the mantra “Affordable Optical Measurement”.
Sensor Designs delivers cost effective, high performance solutions for a rapidly growing 500 M dollar market for optical distance measurement and 3-D imaging for consumer, industrial and military applications. Targeting revenue from technology licensing, OEM sales and engineering consulting services, our business strategy addresses commonly encountered limitations to sustained growth; narrow technology driven market segments, significant capital investment to scale production or the need for specialized manufacturing techniques. Our measurement technology uses commodity electro-optical components and cost optimized designs to allow profitable market entry and self sustained growth with minimal capital investment and supporting infrastructure.
Our Advantages
Large Accessible Market - Distance and proximity sensing is a +1 B market with solutions based on wide array of non-contact measurement technologies including ultrasonic, capacitive and optical. The selection of technology is strongly driven by requirements for accuracy, cost and range. Optical applications vary from simple single beam distance measurement to complex scanning systems for 3-D robotic imaging. Our first three measurement products, currently in Beta testing, address applications up to 100 feet with 1/4 inch accuracy; directly accessing a 500 M dollar market segment by exploiting a price and performance gap separating today's ultrasonic and high-end laser distance measurement products.
Partnerships - We broaden our market position by leveraging our optical distance measurement skills with technology accessed through strategic partnerships. We established a presence in the emerging laser visioning space, presently dominated by Sick GMBH, by partnering with a spacecraft mechanism contractor to develop a 3-D imaging sensor technology through the support of NASA, DARPA and the ARMY from Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contacts.
Flexible Design - The mature optical measurement technology in use by major competitors Bosch, Leica and Hilti, requires expensive detection components and tight opto-mechanical design and manufacturing tolerances. This technology also presents an intellectual property minefield for any company attempting to enter the market using similar approaches. We have focused our technology investment on the development of a patent pending, high performance measurement solution using commodity electro-optical components. Unique performance attributes such as the shortest measurement times, very small size and low power consumption creates exciting new markets for our standard and custom products. Our technology establishes a defendable intellectual property position while improving competitiveness by creating products with lower cost and complexity.
Standard Manufacturing - We plan to minimize internal overhead and upfront costs through local outsourced pilot manufacturing complemented by Asian production. This will allow the flexibility to provide lower volume, high margin custom OEM sensor solutions as well as high volume, low cost manufacturing capabilities for commodity applications.
